"The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. John M. Legler"

This painting was completed by Cameron Anderson in 1981 and 1982. It is the second version, the first having been stolen from a studio at the University of Utah. The present version was exhibited during summer 1982 and Anderson won a prize for it. The painting was given to Legler at Christmas 1982. The characters in the painting are from left to right: Kay Erickson, John Carr, Mark Nielsen in the far background, Sharon Saderup, Sarah Thompson, Jim Stringham, Lane Childs, John M. Legler. Carr replaced Kim Puttuck in the second version.

This painting is based on a famous Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn) painting entitled "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp," 1632 (Royal Cabinet of Paintings, Mauritshuis, The Hague). Tulp was Professor of Anatomy in the Amsterdam Surgeon's Guild. It was customary for each professor to be portrayed in a painting with a group of his disciples.

Cameron Anderson, a former Anatomy teaching assistant, began Medical School at the University of Utah in autumn 1982.
